My mother is about 54 years old and about 5′3. She has wheatish complex (East Indian origin) and is of medium build. I was wondering if anyone could provide me with some tips that I can give my mother on how to dress well for her new career as nursing director for a large hospital. Are there are any online sites where I can see hairstyles and clothing styles for women by age? How about tips on how to apply subtle makeup (for a beginner).

My mother refuses to change her ways but I’m convinced that, if she gives herself the chance, she can look more presentable and beautiful than she already is. Being a guy, I’m completely at a loss when it comes to understanding women’s fashion and makeup so I would appreciate any tips and advice. Thanks!
I’m very proud of my mother. She has accomplished a lot on her own and is very liked and respected. However she is very stubborn when it comes to fashion of any kind - hair, clothing, makeup.

For instance, she absolutely refuses to wear lipstick. I on the other hand don’t know what other alternatives are out there as a substitute. Also, she still has the pony tail hairstyle that she has had for over 40 years. I just want her to look at some alternatives as i know she can look so much more presentable with just a little effort (and a good haircut!)

Thank you all for the great answers! I already have some great ideas about where to head from here. I’m thinking of taking my mom to Dillard’s (or one of the big dept. stores) like GetRDone mentioned so she can get some basic lessons on simple and subtle makeup.

Also, kvcar2 mentioned two brands of clothing and I’ve noted those down. Are there any other specific brands of clothes that are appropriate for this age group (54 years)?

I received a free shampoo, haircut and style from a salon owner in England as a result of a competition and my hair cut is due on Tuesday.Shall I tip the guy or it’s not indicated to tip the salon owner?
The stylist who will do my hair is the salon owner himself.
